Chin implants — frequently asked questions

Honest answers to what patients ask most: silicone safety, the scarless technique, implant vs genioplasty vs filler, recovery, cost and travelling to Istanbul.

Are silicone chin implants safe?

Yes — solid medical-grade silicone is the most widely used chin implant material in the world, with a track record spanning decades. It is a solid, inert block (nothing to leak, unlike breast implant gels), does not need routine replacement, and can be removed if ever wanted. Dr. Erdal works predominantly with silicone implants for exactly this combination of safety record, predictability and reversibility.

Will I have a visible scar?

No. Dr. Erdal performs chin augmentation predominantly through a small incision inside the lower lip — the scarless intraoral approach — so no skin is cut and there is nothing visible, ever. An under-chin (submental) route exists and is chosen only when specifically indicated; if that applies to you, you'll be told exactly why.

Isn't an incision in the mouth riskier for infection?

It's a fair question. The mouth carries bacteria, so the intraoral route demands meticulous technique, sterile handling and antibiotic cover — which is exactly how it's done. In experienced hands infection rates are low with either approach; the trade you gain is a permanently invisible entry point.

How long do chin implants last?

A silicone chin implant is a lifetime device — it does not wear out, expire or need routine exchange. Unlike breast implants, there is no replacement schedule. It can be removed or exchanged if you ever wish, which also makes the procedure essentially reversible.

Will it look and feel natural?

A correctly sized implant placed snugly on the bone feels firm — like chin — and moves with your face. The art is in selection and placement: conservative sizing, symmetric positioning and blending into the jawline are what make results unremarkable in the best sense. Nobody should be able to tell.

Chin implant or sliding genioplasty — which do I need?

An implant adds projection simply and reversibly, with a short recovery — ideal for the majority of mild-to-moderate deficiencies. Sliding genioplasty (cutting and advancing your own bone) is the stronger tool for large advancements, vertical changes or significant asymmetry. Dr. Erdal performs assessment first and recommends by anatomy, not by menu — including referring the question honestly when genioplasty is the better answer.

Chin implant or filler?

Filler can preview modest projection without surgery — legitimate for small changes or testing the idea, but temporary, repeated forever, and weak for real structural deficits. An implant gives defined, permanent projection in a single short procedure. Many patients start with filler and graduate to an implant once sure.

Can the implant move or shift?

A snug, precisely made pocket on the bone holds the implant in position; once healed and integrated, displacement is rare. Early protection — avoiding impact to the chin in the first weeks — is part of aftercare.

I've read implants can erode the bone — is that true?

Long-term studies show silicone chin implants can settle slightly into the bone surface over years — usually millimetres, visible on X-ray and very rarely clinically meaningful. It's a documented, well-understood phenomenon, not a hidden danger — and one reason correct sizing and placement on the right part of the bone matter.

Will my chin be numb?

Temporary numbness or tingling of the lower lip and chin is common as nerves recover from swelling, settling over weeks. The mental nerves are identified and protected during surgery; lasting sensory change is uncommon in experienced hands.

Can it be combined with rhinoplasty?

Very naturally — nose and chin define the profile together, and balancing both in one anaesthesia is one of the most rewarding combinations in facial surgery. Dr. Erdal, whose practice centres on rhinoplasty, assesses the profile as a whole and will tell you if your 'nose problem' is partly a chin problem.

How long do I need to stay in Istanbul?

Typically 4–6 days — consultation and checks, the short procedure, early recovery and a final review before flying. Follow-up continues remotely as swelling settles.

Do I need a visa to visit Türkiye?

Travellers from the UK, Ireland, the US, Canada, Germany and the Nordic countries can generally enter visa-free for short tourist stays, with direct flights to Istanbul from most major cities. Rules can change — check officially before travel.

How much does a chin implant cost in Istanbul?

It depends on the implant style and whether it's combined with other procedures (rhinoplasty, neck liposuction), so it's priced individually. After a free photo assessment you receive a clear, all-inclusive quote — typically 50–70% below comparable private treatment in the UK, US or Northern Europe. Dr. Erdal holds an official health-tourism authorisation (No. 2026034015610080000444996).
